An alarmed Pharaoh tries a second tactic to curb the growth of the Hebrew nation by telling the midwives not to allow the babies to live when they are born—but the midwives fear God and will not violate His values. We must uphold the sanctity of life in the same way today.

Jesus is preeminent in creation and reconciliation. His supremacy and sufficiency are foundational for both the Colossian church and the church today.

Jehovah-Jireh is one of the names of God found in the Bible, specifically in the Old Testament. It is derived from the Hebrew words “YHWH” (the personal name for God, often translated as “LORD”) and “Yireh” (meaning “will see” or “will provide”). Therefore, Jehovah-Jireh can be understood as “The LORD will provide” or “The LORD will see to it.”

Despite 400 years of suffering in Egypt, the faithful followed God and did not become like the people around them. In the same way our faith today grows through adversity as we live in a foreign land that is not our final home.

Paul praises the Colossians for their active faith and love, encouraging believers today to reflect on what they want to be known for—faith, love, and hope in Christ. Just as the saving grace of God rescued us from sin, His sanctifying grace makes it possible for us to live worthy of the gospel.

This will be the introductory lesson to the series and is intended to set up the context for all the names of God we will be studying. In this lesson, we will look at three primary names for God: Elohim, El Elyon, and El Shaddai.
