Despite the situation, I could not bear to tell anyone about my less-than-perfect life. The facade I had created was too good to strip down to reality.
The reality was I needed help, and my marriage was holding on by a thread. Reluctantly, I shared my struggles with a friend from church who told me I needed to get some counseling. Although I heard her words, sadly I did not take them to heart. I was too proud. As Scripture tells us, “pride comes before the fall” (Proverbs 16:18) and I got to learn this firsthand. As my life continued to spiral down, I finally reached out for help. I was humbled enough to realize I did not have a solution for fixing my marriage or climbing out of the pit of despair I was living in.
Over the years, God has reminded me of the importance of being humble. Recently in my quiet time, He whispered to me, “humility begins when we ask for help.” Today, being a source of counsel for others, I have found most people have to be in a great deal of pain to do something different in their lives. They have to get to a place of emotional, mental and sometimes physical turmoil to be vulnerable enough to let someone else in. Matthew 23:12 says, “For those that exalt themselves will be humbled and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” If we try to act like we have all the answers, are self-righteous and prideful then eventually we will be brought to our knees. However, if we approach life in humble surrender on our knees before God and acknowledge He has all power, then we are lifted up. He will bless us with divine guidance and insight while providing His supernatural strength and protection. His peace, love and joy will flow like a river to our hearts. From a seemingly low position, we can be rocketed to a place so spiritually high, gratitude and thanksgiving abound.
Simply put, humility begins when we see ourselves in right relation to God.
Humility begins when we admit we don’t have all the answers.
Humility begins when we have a teachable spirit.
Humility begins when we right our wrongs.
Humility begins when we ask for help.
I am turning a corner in my life and am beginning a new chapter as a biblical lay counselor for my church home, Christ Chapel in Fort Worth. All those years ago, I would never dream God would use me in this capacity. I am humbled by how God wastes nothing in our lives and uses it all for His good.
I look forward to being a tiny part of someone’s healing and recovery, someone who has the humility to reach out and ask for help.
