Shelter in Peace Date Night 3

Let’s be honest: we’ve probably never spent so much time at home. Seriously, couples and families everywhere are breaking world records for uninterrupted time together. As you get ready for another weekend at home, we wanted to help by offering a few fun at-home date nights.

This is Date Night 3 complete with dinner, dessert, and breakfast(!), plus some ambiance setters and conversation starters.

  • Find something to write with, along with something to write on like two lined pieces of note paper or sticky notes (you’d need a total of 24 sticky notes between the two of you).
  • Each line (or sticky note) is for a month of this past year. Label them, starting with June (June, July, August and so on) until you end up at May (this month).
  • Without talking (much!), write down your favorite memory from each month. If you have trouble thinking of something from a specific month, you can either (a) combine two neighboring months, or (b) go back in time one more year. (Hint: Scrolling back through photos on your phone may help jog your memory.)
  • Take your time. This exercise is good for both your mind and personal reflection.
  • Once you’ve both finished your lists, compare notes. Did you have a lot of the same favorite memories?

Answer this together: What’s one thing you’re going to do differently in the NEXT 12 months? Bonus idea: Do a web search for an online print shop that makes custom photo calendars. Spend some time making a 12-month calendar using digital photos from your combined memories list.

Let’s set the mood!

Did you know that music can boost happiness and reduce anxiety? Put on your perfect date night playlist now (we recommend music different from what you normally listen to around the house).

Tonight we’re asking you to stay out of the kitchen and support a favorite local spot that’s offering curbside pickup or delivery. Fort Worth Magazine came up with this handy list for you to peruse as you make your selection.

While you wait on your food to arrive, complete this list of 20 “This or That” questions. Each participant will answer which of the two they prefer. We hope this sparks some good conversation (no time limit on this activity — it may carry over into your dinnertime!).

TWIST: Try answering for your partner and asking them if you got it right before moving on to the next question!

  • Quarantine or public speaking?
  • Build your “forever home” in the city or country?
  • Chicken or fish?
  • Reading or writing?
  • Skittles or M&Ms?
  • A vacation to Europe or the Caribbean?
  • Listen to your heart or your head?
  • Actions or words?
  • Book or movie?
  • Alone or together?
  • Spend or save?
  • Give or receive?
  • Dark or milk chocolate?
  • Sparkling water or soda?
  • Apples or peaches?
  • Paint a wall or color a coloring book?
  • Take Tylenol or Advil?
  • Tortilla chips or potato chips?
  • Queso or guacamole?
  • Sticky note or digital note?

Now, choose your dinnertime ambience with this classic “This or That” question:

OR

  1. What’s the best advice you ever took? What’s the worst advice you ever got?
  2. Thinking back on the “Listen to your heart or your head?” question, what would you say is the main difference between the two? Discuss this together — do you both agree? Now talk about what it’s like listening to Jesus — read Psalm 23:1, John 10:11 and John 10:27 for some insight on what it’s like having Him as your shepherd.

Surprise! We’re stretching this date into the next day! Married couples, we’d love to see what your breakfasts look like, and here are three easier-than-you-think breakfast ideas to try before joining us online for “Unfailing Love,” Christ Chapel’s new series in Ruth! It’s ladies’ choice for what’s on the menu, but work together to make these from scratch.

(Parents: If your kids aren’t into cooking with you, one of you keep the kiddos in the living room while the other gets breakfast going. Since it’s Mother’s Day, mom picks!)
